Souvenirs From Your Family Vacation

When I was young, probably around 1970, I was given a collection of wrapped sugar cubes. Does anyone remember them? The interesting part about these is that the collector had traveled all around the world – he was in the Air Force – bringing home a small remembrance.

I don't remember the places on the packages this many years later, but it was interesting to see the places visited as well as the different designs, the writings, the sizes and shapes – some contained single, some double cubes, some flat rectangles, some squares. I kept these until about 1978 when they were slowly donated into the mouth of my horse, with a few sneaking into mine!

My father, being a navigator in the USAF, traveled a LOT, as well! One thing he did was buy a charm for me from the different places he went or sometimes a small trinket of various types.

I'm sure nowadays you'd be hard pressed to find wrapped sugar cubes as souvenirs from your family vacation, and I'm not sure how 'in' charm bracelets are now, but you and your children might have fun collecting postcards, key chains, bumper stickers, from the towns you pass through. Or, as we tend to do, we just collect lots of pictures, made especially easy with our digital camera.

Hello Faithful Readers -

This is very long, but I wanted to update you why I haven't been bringing you any tips since 8/27.

First off on Sunday, 8/28 we were off to FIRE 2005.

Here's a great family vacation tip #1 - plan your next family vacation around FIRE 2006! My 15 yo son and 17 yo daughter both said they wished it was two weeks long. Truthfully, I haven't had the chance to really ask my 13 yo daughter about it yet. All four of our kids and I enjoyed it so very much.

Oh, another tip #2 - if you are camping, bring a large tarp to put over your tent and tie off to make an overhang, if you don't have a separate screened tent as many do, to cover your table and supplies.

Tip #3 A small shovel would be great.

Tuesday, it started to rain. Thankfully my wonderful 15 yo son had listened to my dear hero husband and put the tarp over our tent. Did I say it rained? One of the other children at camp gave up on his umbrella as the rain was horizontal! As soon as we realized it was going to rain, we flew back to camp and shoved everything in the van or tent then proceeded to tie up the tarp to have some shelter.

All done... Oh, No! a river of water was going right under the corner of the tent. Make do - we grabbed our axe, a plastic camp cup and a serving spoon and dug a trench to guide the water down the hill.

Family Vacation Tip #4 - do remember to have your doctor's phone number with you and your insurance cards. And know where they are - much easier to find.

Family Vaction Tip #5 - Make sure you have a powerful battery in your flashlight. As I was trying to gather stuff at 4 am to take to the ER my flashlight died. Then I turned on my wonderfully bright propane lantern. That is, I tried, puuffffssss. It just ran out of fuel.

Family Vacation Tip #6 - ask at the camp where the nearest ER is, just in case, before you have to rush out. At 4 am I had to ask at the gas station and ended up at a hospital much farther than the closest one. But, thank God, even though it was small, it was an excellent one.

Family Vacation Tip #7 - take the time to print out a detailed medical history for each family member - keep it in the glove compartment. Try answering medical questions after 1 hour of sleep, spending 2 hours in the campground showers since it was the only place clean where she could throw up. Try spending 9/1 until now, except for a few hours, in the hospital with a sick daughter and answering question after question. Certain dates, things you just can't remember by the forth child and years later.

So what is up?

Early, very early Thurs. 9/1 Gina woke up and was sick outside of the tent, and sick, and sick, and sick. Not a great thing in the dark, in the dirt, while camping. Thus the move to the showers - light, cleanable, no bugs, a chair to sit in. Every move of her head - violently sick.

Who do you wake up at a campground to ask for directions? Off to the nearest gas station.

Family Vacation Tip #8 - make sure you have a local map of the area - and get the ER noted on it. I didn't have a map -accidently put Missouri instead of Michigan's in our stuff. Thankfully, even though it was maybe a 20 mile ride, I only had 2 turns to make.

Bad ear infection. Given anti-nausea meds. Nothing. Move, sick. Second dose. Same. CT scan showed her infection had gone into the mastoid bone behind her ear, and the vertigo showed it was in the inner ear.

Transfered to hospital #2 - no pediatrics unit at the first.

On Sat. 9/3 I was able to transfer her to our hospital in town. We were there until 11 pm Monday 9/5. Tuesday am the nurse came to show me how to give her IV antibiotics. In the afternoon off to her doctor to get referrals for physical therapy - she couldn't walk without help, and to see all of her follow up doctors.

He looked at her, talked to the head doctor/administrator and said he didn't think this inability to walk was due to the infection of her bone and wanted her checked out by a pediatric ENT specialist at the University Medical Center.

Ran home, grabbed a bag of stuff and off to the University Hospital.

Problem - didn't get a detailed map. There's at least 5 hospitals in a few blocks here - I went to the wrong hospital's ER.

They evaluated her said she needed to see a neurologist. They called our dr and thus realized I was at the wrong one. So off to this hospital.

That was 9/6 - today is 9/9.

Gina has a double ear infection, her left just mild. In the right ear it went into the mastoid bone, into the inner ear - thus the vertigo. It's also gone into the brain lining. The doctors said it was inflimation of the brain lining. My husband looked it up - I had to push to get them to acknowledge - it's menengitis.

Here I am up early in the am - I slept very light and finally got up to let all know what was up.

She goes in for surgery this am for a tube in her ear so they can drain it and culture it.

That's not all that is wrong. Here is a child who at FIRE climbed through the high ropes challenge course, way up on the air, as if it were in our living room. She now can not do a leg lift more than 3 times without total fatigue in her legs. She's in a wheelchair and a walker. She can not stand more than a few seconds without support.

'Mama, I want to run and go fast but my legs just won't work, they are so tired.'

Yesterday the doctors told us we will be here at least until Monday 9/12.

So, you see why I don't post daily? I lost count at 15 specialist / drs / residents coming in to check her out. It seems everytime my husband calls I have to go, a new doctor has come in and I am questioned and questioned, she is examined and examined. She's had 3 CT's, 2 MRI's, physical therapy, occupational therapy, blood work, a PICC iv line on one arm, a regular iv on the other.

I'm supposed to be writing a book on Family Vacation Tips. I'm actually surprised that I can type this am - though no - I've had to tell this story over and over and over.

Oh, Family Vacation Tip #8 - if you do end up in the ER or hospital, have them give a curtousy call to your own doctor to keep him up to date in case you need to be followed up. He knows what to ask, what he needs to know. And get copies of the medical reports and any tests. The second hospital, I hope we never go there again, lost the first hospital CT scans. I asked - don't I need them to take to our home hospital? No, just take the write up.

Today, my husband is bringing the films that were Fedexed to our house - the doctors need a comparison.

This computer is for the kids here - thus the middle of the night trip for me. Plus, I can't concentrate on typing out tips with all of the specialists that need to talk to me.

API - Mother and son arrested today at the Detroit, MI airport while
boarding a plane with a hand-saw, sword, and catapult. Claimed
weapons were from home-schooling convention. Their fellow
passengers on the San Francisco-bound flight were quoted as
saying, "They were whispering alot about the catapult. You never
know -- they might have been planning to use it to do something as
we flew over the Golden Gate Bridge."

I just had to include this - Yes, we have a Mom and her 5 yo son traveling to F.I.R.E. 2005 all the way from California.

Hmmm, do ya think he's a bit excited? What a great vacation!

We're Off To Family Camp - F.I.R.E 2005!

I'm not sure if I'll be able to post for the next week as we are off tomorrow morning for F.I.R.E. 2005 Family Camp in Michigan!

I hope to be able to borrow a computer that is capable of going online and blog daily, including pictures since there are 'geeks' capable of uploading them and putting them right where they belong - not like me - hit or miss - haven't learned how to do it properly yet. Hey! Maybe I'll learn finally!

All packed except for me - always last! And the food.

But it is first time for SLEEP!!!!!!

I'll pack in the morning before the crew wakes up.

PS - Please be praying for Gina's foot, my 11 yo, she stepped on a bee Friday and even with herbal treatment it's still swollen and tender - she's on crutches. Gina's upset that she might have to be on them tomorrow. Please pray she will be fine in the am, and that we'll (and all attending) not have any medical problems during the week. (she is on a first-name basis with many of our local hospital and ER staff!)

But I Don't Have Any Camping Checklists!

Do you know the last time we went camping? It's been 9 or 10 years!

Here I am, the vacation checklist person, the family vacation tip blogger -- with no camping checklist! I'm drawing a blank as to what to cook, how to keep things cold. I want my refrigerator!!! I want a comfy bed!!! A toilet in the next room over!!! A soft couch to curl up on and read!

Alas, I leave in less than 2 days for a week of camping. Woe is me!

Well, then why am I so excited? I'll get to that in another blog. Right now, how am I dealing with this?

First, call Liz - she's been there before:

Ice, is it easy to get? Yes.
What things do you make? Easy stuff - burgers, brauts, cereal - no fancy pancakes, sandwiches for lunch, freeze what's freezeable ahead of time to help keep it all cold.

Brother-in-law:

Do you have a tent big enough for us to borrow? Yes - 10 x 10, but old, a bit tricky to set up.
Going over tomorrow for a trial run, taking along my 15 yo son - his job, along with my 13 and 11 yo daughters - they can do it while I'm doing mom stuff!

Husband:

I didn't have to say a word - he went and got everything out that we have, inventoried it, made sure all of the stoves worked - thankfully since one of the stoves had a dry-rotten rubber ring, and let me know what we needed. He's so sweet. Made sure my son knows how to work it all.

Car:

Husband - He's so sweet, my hero! He had the car checked over, tuned up. Unloaded all of his tools, cleaning it inside and out. He'll even Rain-X my windshield - great stuff - really works! He takes such good care of us!

Our Boyscout Fieldbook (no, we are not in Scouts, thus the no-camping-checklist problem, but it's a great book to have on hand!):

They have checklists. They have menu suggestions. They tell you what to and not to bring. and how to do it all. Yes!!
Picked out some great menu ideas - never thought fried chicken could be so easy. But then again, ask me later this week (Lord willing, I'll be blogging about F.I.R.E. 2005 while I'm there.)
I'm even going to try deep dish Chicago style pepperoni pizza in my Dutch oven. Picked up pizza tonight for our going away party for the two girls I watch for the summer. Asked Pete of Pete's-a-Pie if I could have some of his pizza dough. He even told me how he used to fix it in his old, deep cast iron frying pans. Mmmmm.

Friend Cheryl:

Camping family - she's lending me a cot and an extra one for one of the kids.

So far so good. Let's see how tomorrow goes! Have some last minute groceries to get, finish the rest of the laundry, pack my clothes, help my youngest get her stuff ready.

We have room for many more families at camp! So, after much prayer and consideration, we have decided to allow every family who registers for camp to invite another family to come FREE of charge.

For those who have already paid $325 to come to camp, you are invited to find another family to join you. You can divide the costs between you or just bless a family in need. And if you share a campsite (optional), the additional family's camping costs will be covered as the campground will allow two families to share a site.

Trains Are A Great Way To Travel For Family Vacations

Many years ago our family decided to visit my family living way out west.

We live in the Chicago area and didn't have the time nor energy to drive to Utah, California and Washington - especially with a 5, 3 and not quite 1 year old, who was not walking.

We decided to fly to Salt Lake City, Utah, with a bounce in Denver, to visit my Dad's 92 year old mom. We arrived with our MOUND of luggage, including a double stroller and a car seat, to take a taxi to Grama Daley's house.

We drove up to her house and had to go around the side down steep stairs to the 'front door' of the part of the house she had lived for 60 years. You see, she had always rented the main floor and lived in the walk out basement facing out over Salt Lake City. It's a good thing all was the same since by then she was almost 100% blind and had to light her stove with a match.

We had a wonderful visit with Grama, mixing visiting with some sightseeing, even going to Park City where my dad was born, seeing the mountains Grama used to walk over.

Then it was time to travel on. In the middle of the night we took a taxi to the train station and lugged our baggage and three sleepy children into a sleeping cabin. We went to sleep to the rickety-rack of the train since all was pitch black in the night mountains.

We had fun eating in the dining car and sitting in the window filled viewing cars. Marky, 3, even decided to fall out of the bunk bed, but he's got a hard head! It was nice having room to move around and to sight see. I think we even went past Donner's Pass, but that was 12 years and many moons ago!

We arrived in Sacramento, California. Mark took a picture of me next to the kids and our luggage, it's a funny sight. If it was on digital, or my scanner was set up I'd post it - it makes me laugh just thinking of it. Did we ever think to pack light and borrow a washer / dryer?

Repeated the routine, this time with my mom's parents, except we had a bit more excitement.

Again, departure was late at night, we packed the rented mini-van, got the kids, hugged Grama and Grampa, went to get in and but the doors had automatic locks on them - shut the door and they locked. The keys? In the car with a train to catch! We called a locksmith, took 30 minutes to get there, got us in. We RACED to the train station. THANKFULLY, the train was late, we just made it with the conductor's last call. RUN, HURRY, frantic panic!

A restful sleeping cabin for the night ride up California's coast and over to Seattle, Washington. Trains are the way to go - we can stretch our legs, play, eat, nurse easily, sitesee. And not only that, I can be on the side of a steep mountain without panicing that the car will go off the cliff! Remember - I live near Chicago where most of the land is FLAT! And most roads are fairly straight. Though, we do have the craziest drivers around.

We arrived in rainy Seattle to spend some rainy days with my brother and his wife. One good thing, I had my first latte - yum! If you go to Seattle, take rain gear.

We ended our trip flying home with another hop through Denver.

Come to Michigan for our family vacation summer camp and enjoy a fun-filled week of hands-on projects, outdoor adventure, evening concerts, and great fellowship. Each day a multitude of hands-on activities, crafts, and classes are offered for all ages!

NEWS FLASH: Now families can come to camp FREE!

"We invite you to join us in Otisville, Michigan, August 29th through September 2nd, 2005, for the 2nd Annual F.I.R.E. Hands-On Family Camp... the "unconventional" homeschool convention! Camp is held the same week each year -- the Monday through Friday just before Labor Day weekend. It is a camp for the entire family, and families come from all over the country to enjoy the events and activities which always include a big hands-on project and enjoyment of the campground's facilities -- a 15 acre lake with swimming, fishing, boating, blobbing, a high-ropes challenge course, basketball, volleyball, archery, hiking trails, and more. Covenant Hills is a beautiful, 200 acre camp, and for 5 whole days we have the camp all to ourselves!

Our "main event" project for the week will be catapult building! We will have contests at the end of the week for distance and accuracy (and rumor has it there will be a big battle after dinner!) Hands-On Science and Skills: Natural Science CLEP Class with David and Laurie Callihan! Turtlebee and Honeytree Farms will offer beekeeping classes and a beehive building project! Jan and Gary Bloom of Books Bloom - travelling bookstore plus will build bookshelves with us!

Hands-On History and Arts: The Victorian Historian teaching about fashion history and Victorian times... we might even have an afternoon tea! Ed and Michele Hopkins - Art Jubilee! And silversmithing - make a purity ring! Felting, basketmaking, and papermaking, mailled armor (chain maille), and then make boffer swords and learn how to sword fight! With our knight we will learn the fine art of creating illuminated manuscripts, create our own coat-of-arms with heraldic colors, try on mailled armor, enjoy sword-fighting demonstrations, learn about chivalry, and much more! Balloon twisting, knitting & crocheting, ventriloquism and sign language... even a contest for the best catapult built with LEGOs! For children ages 2 to 10 we have wonderful morning music classes from The Music Class.

Lost On Vacation: "What's Your Name?"

When our children were young, we wanted them to know their name, address and phone number in case they were ever lost.

To just memorize it, to say it over and over doesn't make it stick really well. Songs do.

Sing this - yes outloud - to 'It's raining, it's pouring, the old man is snoring.' You will have to sort of resing the last line to add the phone number in - with some practice, it works.

At a very early age, my children could sing 'their' song. We kept the same tune, each singing with our own information.

Don't just teach them the song. Prompt them with "what's your name?" Make a game of it, sing it in the car.

For those of you who are worried about a stranger asking them their name, they shouldn't be unsupervised until they are old enough to know the difference between telling or not telling strangers, unless they get lost and thus - the song - very helpful knowledge!

If they are 2 or 3 and can sing the song every time Grama or Grampa, Aunts or Uncles ask them, and get rewarded for it, hopefully they will be sing it to the person who finds them if they wander off.

A Lost Toddler On Vacation

How do you prepare for a lost toddler or child who isn't capable of following instructions about getting lost?

In Willy Whitefeather's Outdoor Survival Handbook for Kids, Willy suggests this:

Litte Tater wanders away from camp, but nobody saw him leave! Mom put a bright red fluorescent vest on him, so he can be seen, and strapped on some homemade jingle bells (on his ankles and wrists), so he can be heard and keep animals away!

Pin your cell phone / contact information inside their shirt so you could be paged, if they do get lost.

Another suggestion is to to get a child safety harness. Ok, I know some of you might be thinking "I have a CHILD not a DOG!"

But think about these issues -

Nursemaid's Elbow - a common injury in children 1 - 3. Most commonly it occurs when a child is falling and the individual holding the hand doesn't let go. I know, my three girls all had it, as well as my husband, their elbow popped out of joint.

Curiosity - It allows your child to explore and still be quickly and easily pulled back from danger.

Child Abductions - With the rise of child abductions and sexual assaults, a potential kidnapper will find the leash an obstacle not worth the effort or risk. Leashes are not just for dogs: children & safety)

Keep your children safe, plan ahead, be prepared.

Lost On Vacation - What To Learn Ahead Of Time

So you want to teach your child (or yourself) what to do if they get lost out in the woods ... only you have no clue! And what do what do you do if your car konks out in the middle of a long, lonely desert road or caught in a deep snow drift in the middle of a blizzard?

A wonderful book you and the kids will enjoy is called Willy Whitefeather's Outdoor Survival Handbook for Kids.

"A lot of boys and girls have gotten lost out in the desert, woods, and mountains and never returned - 'cause no grown-up ever showed 'em what to do ... I wrote this book for my grandchildren and for all you kids so you'll make it bake safe." Willy Whitefeather

This book is filled with humor and silly cartoons making a serious subject fun to learn about.

What's covered? Things like:

*Always carry a whistle - the sound carries much farther than your voice.
*A list of what to take with you each time you hike.
*How to mark your trail so you can find your way back.
*Finding North
*What to do if your car or you are caught in a blizzard or a desert.
*Staying warm or cool.
*If you are out hiking and a lightning storm blows in.
*Building a shelter and a fire without matches or knife.
*Telling time with your fingers.
*Emergency food and water.
*I've used this as a read-aloud and our children have all read it just for fun.

We have even tried practicing most of this tips, like letting our kids go ahead on a hike and marking the trail so we can follow and find them.

This is a great book to have on hand to review. Before you go off on your next vacation or day trip, check this book out. It is well worth it.

Sail Away On A Barefoot Family Vacation

Cruises just have never appealed to my husband and I since our vacations are in quiet, rural areas away from crowds, noise (of course that doesn't include nature's noise), activity directors......that is, except for one particular type...

Can you imagine after reading ...Carry On, Mr. Bowditch...Treasure Island...Robinson Crusoe...Swiss Family Robinson ...setting off on a sailboat and learning how to sail? Going on a treasure hunt? Swimming off the side of the boat? (only if the water is CLEAR! - otherwise I do NOT swim where the Creature from the Black Lagoon can come up and GET ME!!!) Does that tell my age, or what?

Since I was young I have always wanted to go on a barefoot cruise like Windjammer Barefoot Cruises offers.

I forgot all about them since for years I had an infant or toddler attached at the hip making it a bit difficult so I just put it aside.

Hmmm, I think I'll have to check into this!

Have You Ever Lost A Child While On Your Vacation?

A few years ago we went went on a mini family vaction to Illinois' Legislative Day at the state capital. Legislative Day is sponsored by Illinois' CHEC - Christian Home Educators Coalition. Home School families take two homemade cherry pies to deliver them to the state's Legislators and getting a chance to visit and talk with them as well as the group all getting together to sing.

We were at the hotel next door to the Capital and needed to go through to the building on the other side. I was carrying our pies walking along with my husband and four children. We meandered as we passed through.

In the rotunda at the middle of the hall, we stopped and watched an interesting presentation of some kind (it's been a long time!) We proceeded on out the other end of the Capital towards our meeting place.

As we walked along, a friend of ours called out "Haven't you forgotten something?"

I looked down at my pies, raised them up and said a questioning "No?" She ended up asking us two more times with us not having a clue as to what she was talking about.

Then she said, "Gina!"

We turned around and realized our youngest, who was about six, was missing. We RAN into the building and down the hall with our other three children right behind us while people stopped and stared at our mad dash.

As we reached the rotunda, we saw Gina calmly standing there, holding onto the rope around the presentation, attentively watching while waiting for us.

When we asked her why wasn't she upset, she told us that she prayed and then stayed right where she was like we taught her.

Deep sighs!

Whether you are on a vacation, or on errands around town, teach your children to 1) pray, 2) stay right where they are and 3) to stay calm. It is MUCH easier to find a still target then one that is moving around. Plus, it usually doesn't take long to figure out you're forgetting something, so they shouldn't be alone too long.

Don't forget to regularly review with them, asking them 'What if you turned around and couldn't find me at the mall?' 'We're out hiking in the mountains, you see an interesting bug and bend down to watch it. You straighten up to follow along and all you see are trees in every direction. What should you do?"

Have a plan and discuss and review it with all of your children from your toddler on up to your teen.

Do You Have An Accurate Map To Your Vacation Spot?

A few times I've been out playing with the kids in the front and a car or a truck stop and ask for directions. They've used free online mapping programs - and were WAY of course!

Well, I just found a GREAT trip planning / map website and it's non other than Rand McNally!

I went to the Plan A Road Trip link and mapped out a pretend trip, complete with stops and hotels.

At first I thought the maps were way too zoomed out, but then I discovered how to zoom in. It really shows details - great for me - I like to see the map so I have the general idea of it in my head instead of just looking at directions, otherwise I feel like I am out hiking in the total darkness with a flashlight just lighting my steps. I want to know where I am going and how I am getting there!

There are links to weather and updates on road construction - an ever present reality on most major roads here in the Chicago area! Even if the maps say 30 minutes, always allow double, and if it's really important, triple time.

I've been sharing some of my knowledge with you on family vacation tips, and now I'd like to ask you if you could share some of your knowledge with me.

A while back I sent out this email to many groups of people trying to get some information on family vacations but I still need more! Hopefully you can help!

Hello fellow homeschoolers (and other families, too) -

I am trying to put together a list, (with the hopes a book) of great family vacation spots, complete with pictures, amenities, what was good/bad. We have found it very time consuming and difficult to find places like this for ourselves, have had a few 'never agains', and so I'd like to glean from your experiences - to help us find more places, and to be able to share with others in a book.

I'm not looking for places:

- to camp or take an RV
- hotels or resorts
- in urban or city areas
- with preplanned activities, activity directors
- with many other groups of people / crowds
- with planned out vacation packages

I am hunting for places:
+ Very family friendly
+ rural - quiet, out of the way places, where you can explore nature
+ if it's on a farm/ranch, join in on farm chores
+ with one or just a few rental units spaced well apart - private & quiet
+ rentals with a furnished kitchen, a/c, heat, linens, ... comforts of home
+ whether it would be good for families with little children/older children or both
+ places within an hour of places to go explore/learn history - like state parks, historical sites, etc.

ALSO, I am looking for the above rentals that that would comfortable house a large family.

Did you ever watch the Honeymooners and Ralph says to his wife "To the moon Alice, to the moon!?"

Well, now you can start planning that vacation to the moon! Russian space officials announced they have plans to let 2 people join them, possibly in 2008, on a 10 - 21 day trip around the moon in one of their spacecraft and they might even stop at the international space station.

Start putting your money aside now! You only need to save every day for the next three years $91,324.20 per day! $100 million for round trip tickets for 2. So much for my budget!

Actually, my son asked me today if I'd like to go into space - No way!!! I panic on ferris wheels and get sick on merry-go-rounds.

Start Saving Now For Next Year's Vacation

A long time ago my husband and I promised each other that if we had to pay interest on credit cards we'd cut them up and quit using them.

So how do we pay for things like Christmas presents or vacations? We start the year before putting aside monthly. If you aren't already on a budget, I highly recommend it - it's amazing how money can seem to just flow out of your pockets leaving you wondering where it goes if you don't have a budget and keep track of your expenses.

So you are wondering how you could possibly put aside that much money - well, instead of me reinventing the wheel - this articles lists some really great ideas - like instead of ordering a $20 carryout pizza get a frozen one or around here on Fridays you can go to Dominicks Grocery Store and get a large pizza for $5.00!

So you don't like pizza on Fridays - get them uncooked and stick it in the freezer. For that matter, stick a few in there for those last minute nothing's ready days.

Plan ahead for emergencies on family vacation

This is the first time I have tried to prep the whole family for a long vacation since my wife died.

Two weeks doesn't seem like a long time, if you're reporting for duty with the Marines, or have to come up with money for taxes. But if you measure it in socks for four people, it's darn near forever.

We are going to the wilds of Wyoming for two weeks of airplanes, cars, horses and whining. It will be fun. It better be fun; I am breaking the bank just getting ready for it.

This week, I am taking each of my sons to lunch and then shopping. The lunch gives me a chance to talk to each one alone and explain what will happen on the trip; setting expectations to avoid "surprises."

"Wyoming? What are we going to do there?"
"We're going to ride horses! And wear cowboy hats!"
"Are we bringing the Xbox?"
"Sorry, no place to plug it in on a horse."

Essential gear: The shopping collects together three kinds of vastly necessary items; socks, underwear and emergency supplies. The socks come from my realization that it could take 5 weeks just to match 28 pairs of socks. Four guys times 7 days. After that, we either have to find a Laundromat or a really big sink. Right now, we just put them all in a big basket. If you want socks, start digging! So, as a special going away treat, I am buying everyone socks. What a Dad!

Because we are going with my parents, a special added attraction will be new underwear. Somehow, the thought of my mother spotting my sons in old ratty underwear outweighs the need for flight insurance.

Which brings us to the third kind of supplies: emergency kits.

The kind of emergency I am guarding against is deadly to any long family trip: boredom. Just the thought of my sons breaking out in a shouting match on the airplane or in the car in front of my parents gives me night terrors. Poor old things, they don't know anything about children. They could be permanently scarred, or worse, think their favorite son is raising a bunch of hooligans.

My mother used to give me an emergency kit at the beginning of each trip in the hope it would keep me too busy to set the car or hotel room on fire. My wife used to do the same thing for our children, except that she wrapped each item within the kit, like a present. It works.

Backseat fun: My mom's kits were filled with comic books, little models and other small wonders. I distinctly remember the smell of model glue in the backseat of the car mixing with cigarette smoke from the front. Probably not a medically sound solution, but psychologically, those kits kept sanity close at hand.

I don't intend to wrap each item; I'm a crummy wrapper anyway. But I do want to create the same effect, the peace of busy hands and closed mouths. Consequently, after socks and underwear comes emergency kit contents selection. I get suggestions from each boy about what the others would like. This preserves some of the surprise.

Special powers : A good emergency kit might not be enough to stop a really powerful meltdown, so I set expectations carefully at the lunch before the shopping. I warn each one that if they embarrass me in front of my parents, I have a special horror planned for them.

For my oldest, I am bringing a hammer, which I will use with an excess of joy on his beloved iPod, should he transgress. For my middle son, who is a lot bigger than any of us, I promise to cancel his "World of Warcraft" Internet subscription. He turns a little pale whenever I mention it.

Last is my youngest, sweetest son, all of 10 years old, who has just entered the age of modesty. Any emotional explosions will force me to reveal the naked pictures I have of him at a younger, more open stage. I will be only too happy to share them with my parents, the checkers at the supermarket, passing flight attendants or even his classmates at school.

Take Care Of Your Car Before Your Family's Vacation

My job is to get the meals planned, make sure the kids are packed. Thankfully, my husband's job is to make sure the car is ready for a long road trip - often in the mountains - but then again, anything more than a mole hill is considered a mountain when you live in the Chicago area!

Here are some suggestions:

Check the coolant level and inspect the radiator cap
Inspect your radiator hoses
Inspect your fan belts
Inspect your battery
Test your starting and charging system
Maximize performance and gas mileage

We Can't Afford A Family Vacation? Day Trips

The beginning of this year we didn't think we could afford a vacation rental this year. We came up with an idea - Day Trips.

We decided we would use our house as our 'hotel.' We started planning places to go that were free or low cost, with a couple of more expensive items since we wouldn't have housing costs.

We could go to Lake Michigan beaches, museums, Michigan Dunes, the zoo, horseback riding, mini-golf, natural wonders, hiking, canoeing, etc.

Meals - some eating out, some made ahead, picnics, etc. Using some paper/disposable products.

Chores / House - well, we would just take a vacation from our regular chores - plus if we are out gallivanting who's going to mess up the house? Leave the answering machine on - and DON'T answer it! Don't even open the mail - you're on vacation! Leave the mowing for when you get back or pay the neighbor boy to mow it!

Pets - since we'd just be gone for the day, we'd get a neighbor to let them out. On some of our trips, our dogs would join us.

We might even set up the tent in the back complete with S'mores over a fire, or sleep out under the stars. And stars ... we could plan a day trip a ways out from here where you can actually see the stars and stay out late to look for shooting stars and satellites.

See - you can take a vacation without much more than the cost of gas!

Family Biking Vacations - Bike Seats vs. Bike Trailers

I am back from my bike trip! A wonderful time with hours of biking and hiking.

As I was pedaling along watching families ride by, I was remembering biking with our babies and toddlers.

If I could go back in time, I would go with a bike trailer over bike seats.

First off, did you ever try keeping your bike upright with a 30# toddler on the back in a bike seat? I remember stopping, steadying the bike on one foot while trying to dismount and turn around to reach my daughter, yelling for Mark to quick help me because the bike was wobbling seriously. We ended up putting the seat on his bike after some near complete tips!

Or, I'm not sure how the new ones are - I'm sure much better, but the one we had wasn't tilted back enough so that when our daughter had her helmet on it hit the back of the seat, tipping her head forward.

And fall asleep? Her head would bang around until we got back so my husband would have to reach around and hold her head still.

And what if I crashed?

Bike trailer -

I could take 2 kids at once.
I could get off to pick up my sunglasses that fell off without unbuckling and taking out a child.
Diapers and supplies can go in the trailer vs. on my back.
Toys can be played with and not dropped so that I have to stop the bike, take the toddler out, pick up the toy, put her back in and go on. Yes, I did put toys on little play chains, usually.

And, I could ride up to the grocery store, go shopping and easily carry my bags back instead of being limited to 2 bags - one on each handle with each constantly shifting and banging.

And I could join the others who take along their dogs next to their child. Oops, my dog is 100#'s - that won't work! But I'm sure my daughter's rat would enjoy the ride - she loves car rides!

We didn't get a bike trailer because of the cost, but now, looking back, a trailer would make our family bike trips much easier and safer. If I only knew what I know now!

Family Bike Trips

If you like to bike, call your state's tourism office and ask them to send you their bike maps. There are so many varieties of trails now. Many are on old railroad beds, many travel along scenic rivers.

My husband and I are going on a mini-vacation where we are doing just that. Found a place close enough to get back to our family in case of an emergency (one of our daughters has bad asthma!) Found a hotel near the middle branches of the paths so we can go out in different directions each time.

I was going to get a bike pack - but the ones that mount behind the seat are very small and costly - not worth it. Or I could have bought a rack for the back of my bike then a custom bag for it. $$$ So, instead, I was brilliant and decided .... to use one of our small backpacks!

But I did splurge on a new, soft gel seat! A biking vacation does not go well with my old, hard seat! Also a great thing to get is bike gloves - these you can get at Wal-mart. I actually like the cheap ones there better than the expensive ones I got at the bike shop - too slippery!

Yes, sometimes we do take the kids - this is just our traditional anniversary ride - for just the two of us!

I saw this article about watching what you eat while on vacation - No unwanted souvenirs: Sample exotic food on vacation without bringing home food-borne illness.

We went to a 4 star hotel in Mexico complete with going to their recommended restaurants. Guess what? I was sick for a day but my husband got so sick I had to call in a doctor and had to be treated for another month at home!

So read up and be careful to follow their suggestions .... though we thought we had 'followed the rules"!!!

How Do On-line Reservations Work?

Four giant airline computer systems in the United States handle nearly all the airline reservations in the country. (They're known as CRSs, for computer reservations systems, or more often now GDS for global distribution systems.) Although each airline has a "home'' CRS, the systems are all interlinked so that you can, with few exceptions, buy tickets for any airline from any CRS. The dominant systems in the U.S. are Sabre (home to American and US Airways), Galileo (home to United), Worldspan (home to Delta, Northwest), and Amadeus (Continental and many European lines.) Many of the low-price start-up airlines don't participate in any of these systems but have their own Web sites where you can check flights and buy tickets. Southwest, the largest and oldest of the low-price airlines, doesn't participate, either. Southwest's web site gets car and hotel info from Galileo, but the info seems not to flow the other way. Orbitz, one of the big three online travel agencies, runs its own system which is linked directly to many of the airlines.
In theory, all the systems show the same data; in practice, however, they get a little out of sync with each other. If you're looking for seats on a sold-out flight, an airline's home system is most likely to have that last, elusive seat. If you're looking for the lowest fare to somewhere, check all four systems because a fare that's marked as sold out on one system often mysteriously reappears on another system. Some airlines have rules about flight segments that are not supposed to be sold together even though they're all available, and at least once I got a cheap US Airways ticket on Expedia, which didn't know about all the US Airways rules even though I couldn't on their own site or Travelocity which did know about them. On the other hand, many airlines have available some special deals that are only on their own Web sites and maybe a few of the online agencies. Confused? You should be. We are.
The confusion is even worse if you want to fly internationally. Official fares to most countries are set via a treaty organization called the IATA, so most computer systems list only IATA fares for international flights. It's easy to find entirely legal "consolidator'' tickets sold for considerably less than the official price, however, so an online or offline agent is extremely useful for getting the best price. The airlines also can have some impressive online offers on their web sites. http://airinfo.aero/

Driving Home From Vacation In Pouring Down Rain

We are in a drought here in the Chicago area, though we have had a few downpours - like yesterday evening, for a few minutes at least, where you might need to pull over for lack of visibility. I just about had to pull over, my cart that is, the lights in Wal-Mart were going on and off!

I remember driving home from Tennessee one year in our Dodge van - it started to rain - well, actually it poured so hard some cars pulled over to wait it out! I drove along in amazement because I wasn’t even using my windshield wipers except on a slow delay.

This was the first time my husband had treated our windshield with Rain-X. The rain just beads up and rolls off. It’s great! We don’t go on any trip without it and try to always keep a coating on our windshield even when we aren’t traveling hours away to our vacation rental!

Psst! Kids! This story is just for you.

We know a trip isn't really successful until you get a parent to utter the immortal words, "If you don't stop that, I am going to pull this car over right now. I'm not kidding."

Some parents are easier to break than others. Some make rookie mistakes, like giving you caffeine before strapping you in. But with these simple steps, you will be able to annoy even the most mellow folks.

This is a simple 9-point plan to drive parents crazy.

Enjoy. (and don't tell them you heard these from us [The Spokesman-Review].

Place your index finger, also known as a "pointer," millimeters from a sibling's arm, head or nose. When he or she complains, just keep saying, "I'm not touching, I'm not touching."
Here's a classic: the simple repetition of the phrase "Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" It's both annoying and inquisitive, the latter a trait parents generally like to encourage.
Gently, randomly kick the seat in front of you. Enough said.
Make up your own rap about your parent. "My Mom's so lame, I know it's true. She's wearing purple along with blue ... yeah, she's lame. So lame ..."
Flatulence noises are always an attention getter.
Repeat everything someone else says. (Repeat everthing someone else says.) It gets old fast. (It gets old fast.)
Sing Britney Spears' songs. Better yet, go on and on about how she's your role model.
Request the same CD over and over. If it includes songs like "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" all the better.
If you have multiple siblings, make it a point never to go to the bathroom at the same time. For pure family fun, there's nothing like making hte parents stop every 30 minutes.

If you would go during the off season it's much cheaper.

This could make a fun day trip or an overnighter.... hmm or an anniversary get away! Then you won't need your car to lug all of your kids' stuff!

Vacation Bible School - The Final Day!

Tonight's the final night for our Vacation Bible School - Jerusalem Marketplace so I will be back to posting more in my Family Vacation Tips.

It has been SO much fun and very tiring. Tonight is the climax when ........ Oh! I can't leak out the secret!

Many kids have trusted in Jesus. We are all getting into acting this all out.

When we found out that Jesus was taken away to jail I overheard children say "why didn't they take Satan?!?!"

"Why did they take away Jesus?!?!"

The beggar overheard children say "We need to save some of our bread tomorrow for the beggar!"

I must go! I have animals to sell and clothing to make - if you come and you do not wear the local outfit you must pay $1.00 Foreigner Tax! The Taxman will find you and collect or the centurion will take you to jail. Ahhh, but I have clothing to sell you!!!

Can't Afford To Go Out To Dinner While On Vacation? The Pusateri Diner!

Today when my husband came home for lunch we were whisked off into our bedroom along with a bell to call for service, if needed. A few minutes later our 'waitress' came in and read off the choices of appetizers, main courses, desserts and beverages available for the day. She took our order and we soon were escorted into the eating area.

We walked into a darkened room draped with sheets, the table arranged with various candles surrounding some freshly picked flowers. Our attendants, our 2 youngest daughters and the two girls I watch for the summer, had dressed up, the hostess seating us. We were served our meal while music played in the background. As we enjoyed our dessert, we were entertained with dancing, followed by a farewell song and dance as Papa went out the door back to work.

Our children have done this many times in the past - making up menus, decorating, cooking, serving, leaving us to have time to ourselves. This helps financially, and is just plain fun - for us and the kids.

Going on vacation, your anniversary coming up? Have your kids plan out a gift for you. Sometimes, like today, it just happened about five minutes before lunch.

As I am typing this, I just heard my kids talking to each other while cleaning up “Are we going to do the diner tomorrow, too?” “Yes.” “Oh, good, cool.”

The focus of my church's Vacation Bible School's mission project is Camp Ray Bird - a camp for Indiana / Michigan area 'at risk' children.

Children go for what probably is their only 'vacation.' They get to 'vacation' from.....the inner city, hunger, crime, abuse, danger, drugs, guns, death, while learning about the love of Jesus and having a great time.

The favorite camper quote from the summer is, "Why are all the people so nice at Camp Ray Bird?"

We Can't Afford A Family Vacation! Vacation Bible School

I am on staff for our Vacation Bible School - it starts this Saturday, July 16th.

That means this week is full of the last minute preparations!

I will try to keep posting .... that is if I have time!!!! I just found out we are short about 60 outifits - just easy throws with simple cutting and edging - but still!!!! PANIC!!!

For many years our favorite place to go was Kishauwau on the Vermilion - about time we went back!

Sit on the front porch watching your kids race around a huge field ringed by trees and some spread out cottages, and on to jumping aboard the owner's ATV to help feed the ponies.

Take along your bikes to ride quiet country roads or lay out in the middle of the field at night watching for falling stars.

I have, many times and only a few times undercharged. In I march to fix the difference.

Has that ever happened to you at the gas pump? I challenge you to check your receipt and compare it to the advertised price. A friend of mine works at a gas station where the owner sets the price at the pump for more than the price on the sign. My friend can't believe that no one notices.

My Comments On A New York Times Article: "Family Vacation Styles"

Seeing how I am writing a blog on family vacations, I figured I'd see what is out there.

I found this New York Times' article Family Vacation Styles: Lavish or Modest, Educational or Adventurous; On a Dig or Through a Telescope, You Just Might Learn Something By SUZANNE MacNEILLE.

Suzanne talks about different vacations that are educational, without calling them such for the children's sake, how different tours incorporate education with fun activities.

What really hit me was the 'Lavish or Modest' in the title. I couldn't find anything listed as modest.

China is a top destination this year...The price, with air fare, starts at $4,490; $4,090 for children under 12.
A view of a much more familiar culture is offered on a seven-day family tour .... $2,299 ($2,199 for ages 12 and younger)
On a series of family-oriented expeditions to a dig site in the Montana badlands .... Prices for the five-day trip, including hotel accommodations, start at $995; $465 for 15 and under. Campers are charged $120 a day; $60 for 15 and under.

Then I thought "Oh, here's one that's not so bad a price .... oh - read it and see how many nights this is for!

If your child is a stargazer and has the wherewithal to stay awake until sunrise, Kitt Peak National Observatory, in Arizona, 56 miles southwest of Tucson, offers a rare opportunity to spend an entire night looking through powerful telescopes at galaxies, planetary emission nebulae and star clusters. Years ago I called the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and ordered some free posters "send me all you have!"

But I forgot all about that...until an email from a someone - can't remember who - gave IL DNR's site for online ordering.

You should see the stuff I ordered!!! I was like a kid at Christmas when my huge package came. Our hallway and two daughter's rooms are PLASTERED with posters. Oh, yes, and a few are right outside of the bathroom door - if you don't close it you can learn a few things sitting there! In fact - you ever have those facts that just don't sink in? Ours get posted on the shower door right across from the 'throne'!

IL DNR's Education internet site has an online order form, instructions for things like bird houses, contests and grants, lists of educational programs.

Educational Material Available is the starting page for their catalog - "there is no charge any of the materials."

Do You And Your Kids Like 'Freebies'?

Do you and your kids like 'freebies'? We do!

One year we went up to Devil's Lake State Park in Wisconsin. In the Nature Center we found that there is a Wisconsin's Jr. Ranger/Wisconsin Explorer Program. Many, if not all states have them. Our kids really enjoyed working to get their patch - they did most of the work themselves.

With a Junior Ranger (grades K-3) or Wisconsin Explorer (grades 4 and up) activity booklet to guide them, families set off on trails to learn about the environment. Children can listen for crickets, take a bat walk, do a soil experiment, draw themselves as a ranger, look for a den tree, imagine themselves as a deer, or play log tag. When at least half of the activities in the booklet are completed, the child receives a colorful patch and a certificate.

The patch and certificate can be awarded at any participating state park, or you may complete the activities at home, and mail the checkoff sheet to a park.

The program is designed so that a child may do a different activity ooklet each year, from kindergarten through sixth grade. Patches for 2004 have a butterfly for Junior Rangers and a bat for Wisconsin Explorers.

These activities help children develop an awareness and appreciation of the natural world and a sense of stewardship toward Wisconsin's natural resources.

A great thing to have on hand at home and on vacations is a net, or 2, or 3...

The dollar store by us has them for $2.99. I just bought 2 - and I need to go back for more!!! My 4 kids like them and for the summer I have 2 extra children I babysit. Of course, there are all of the friends that come over and need one!
They love to go frogging, canoeing, wading, bird watching ... in the creek behind us. These 2 pictures are from our vacation rental in Missouri 4 years ago.

Get one for each child and just let them explore - see what they find - have them tell you all about it. Watch their faces lite up. We have a bunch of field books for looking up their finds, if they want to. Oh, and by the way, keep your camera with you!

Nature Vacations: A Book "Nature Study The Easy Way"

As our nature study is done in a very relaxed, natural way, I was quite interested when I received an email from Cindy Rushton titled "Nature Study and Family Day!"

I've posted bits of the email which was excerpted from her best selling book Nature Study The Easy Way E-Book

I thought of [our monthly Nature Study family trips] as fun and learning, but never equated them with enough value to consider this, our every day life, as educational. I knew that books were educational, but what about all of those "things" we found ourselves doing on ...our Family Day?? In all of the "books" with field trip ideas, those things were listed, but did this really count as SCHOOL?? Oh Yes! It did count and really was greater because it instilled a love of learning, which would last during all of our life.

...Nature Study is all around us...The natural things that are done with the family each day can become the vital, life-giving "curriculum" that breathes life into your studies. The study of Nature Study can become easy as we make a priority to have a set time for a "Nature Study Excursion [or Family Day]" each month!

...As I watched my children, I realized just how EASY Nature Study really is. I did not have to prepare a lesson - God had already prepared the lessons of the day. I did not have to know any questions or any answers to the questions that were bubbling up from deep within my children. As they played, the lessons developed and were learned first-hand. I just sat back and enjoyed the fresh air, the cool breeze, and the excitement of learning from curiosity!

...Just in...one excursion, the children learned about currents, pond life (scum is what I call it!), skipping rocks, edible plants, making boats, racing boats, finding rocks, catching minnows, hunting for frog eggs.just to name few things! This did not take any planning by my husband or me. These lessons developed from a mixture of the bounty before us and the curiosity God places inside each of us!

...As parents, we do not have to have the "knowledge" about everything...We just need to seize all the natural, easy lessons before us...the ability to observe and enjoy! We can ask questions...take time to notice the details...And we can teach the most important lesson of all - to look it up!

...Nature Study is just another area of life that God teaches us once we seek...Of all...those simple lessons from our time together as a family learning together - the greatest lesson is that our family memories are more important than sticking a bunch of dry, useless facts into the minds of our children. Those relationships are our priority. These days shared together are our treasures! This cannot get lost in the pursuit of knowledge because it is the Main Thing!

...This reminds me of our adventures in camping! ... We were learning minute-by-minute the whole time we were there. Sure, there were wonderful lessons in nature...even collected some nature goodies. But the most important aspect of this time together was not the lessons, but the unspoken lesson - that time together is fun. We can giggle and enjoy the memories now and forever. This is something that can never be taken away! Prayerfully one day, our children will take their
children camping and tell the "stories" of our memories we built-even if they are completely hilarious!

... the neatest thing about our family times has to be that Harold and I do not have to plan lessons or objectives for our "teaching" times. We simply teach the most important lessons of all - who we are!

We want to teach our children to love God, to see the preciousness of others, to stay in awe of the little things to be learned, to seize each moment for all the joy and fun in it, and that a happy Christ-centered family life is the most precious gift we possess. These lessons are easily taught during that time set aside for family. They are a precious commodity!

So, why not tap in to what you and your family "happen" to do naturally? ...

Nature Vacations: Fine, As Long As It's Not In Snake Country!!!

I live near Chicago and for those of you who don't know, we don't have poisonous snakes. Well, actually we do, but they are so rare there is no worry.

I did worry when we went south for vacation - down in snake-ville Missouri. The first time I made reservations, I made sure it was in mid-April when snakes were rare.

We loved it so much we wanted to go when it was a bit warmer. Hmmm, that is, my husband did. “What about the snakes?!?!” You see, my children climb into, over, and up things, they love to explore ... but there are snakes in Missouri!!!!

We’ve gone there 4 years in a row and each time a bit warmer. And each time I’ve done much better with snakes, poisonous ones, that is. Did you know that we’ve only found 2 poisonous snakes in all of that time and they were ... um, gulp, pause, take a deep breath ... brought to the house by my husband? But we won’t go there!

I will, instead focus on the non-poisonous ones we’ve found.

Yes, that’s a Black Rat Snake - a bit tiny isn’t he?!? And at the end of his tail is my then-6 year old daughter!

She ain’t afraid of no snakes! Actually, all of my children know the difference between poisonous and non and will readily pick up a snake.

I do too, but, I stick with garter snakes and boas, oh, and frozen ones to pass off to my family to disect, skin and tan.

"Here you go, and by the way, it's time for my walk! See you later!"

Nature Vacations: It's A Bird! It's A Plane! Well It's Not Superman!

Did you ever watch a show where one person stops and is looking intently up in the air, the next person comes along and looks? Soon a whole crowd is trying to figure out what everyone is looking at.

Try it - go out, find a bug crawling, a worm wiggling, a spider hanging, or maybe even a Plains Garter Snake enjoying some frog legs (oops toad-legs) and start exploring yourself.

If you are bored with or afraid of nature, your kids might not be willing to jump in and explore? Well, some will, but I have seen many children robbed of their natural inquisitiveness by their parents fear of nature.

Most creatures will go out of their way to keep from being hurt and often, if you are slow and careful, you can get up close and watch.

Nature Vacations: Nature Without Camping?

Nowadays we like to have a comfy bed and cabin to enjoy - we aren’t into camping anymore, though I have spent much time camping in the past, even camped in a pup tent in the middle of Wisconsin’s February when we could walk on the snow during the day and not sink in!

We look for places where we can just look out the window for wonderful views and can go right out the door to find creatures, plants, rocks...

Camping isn’t the only way to expose my family to much more nature then we can get in our backyard or at the forest preserve - we can have our comfort and an abundance of nature!

Vacation Kitchens: Who's Turn Is It To Cook?

A few weeks before we are due to launch off, we make up our menu. We do take in consideration what, if anything, is in the freezer to cover any meals.

Each person gets to be the cook for a day - they choose what favorite thing they will make ahead for dinner, if possible, what's for lunch, breakfast - are they adventurous, or just cereal?

That's all the cook does for that day - kitchen duty wise. The rest of us set and clean the table and kitchen.

We also occasionally rotate chores - one person cooks that day, one person has all the set up and clean up.

This works out especially well with paper products and premade foods!

Broke From Going Out To Eat On Vacations?

My niece was visiting the other day, and talked about eagerly waiting for her mom to return from her vacation. She'd been given money to eat out but quickly tired of it, yearning for some of her mom's home cooking.

Did you ever figure the costs for a family of 6 to eat out for 7 days, 3 meals a day? OK, free continental, scratch breakfast. Kids eat free, oops, 12 and under. That eliminates 3 of my 4 children. Conservatively figure $5/5 for lunch, $10/5 dinner - that's $425. Ok, add tips, add a few meals out for all 6. It adds up.

I was at Wal-Mart today and an ad over the speaker stated you could save $600 for a week's vacation, though I didn't catch for how many people, if you rented a place with a kitchen, shopped at a discount grocery store, and cooked most, if not all of your meals.

Making meals ahead and freezing them for vacation - is that a job worth saving $600 or even $300?

I'm willing! Save some money and enjoy some home cooked meals!

Vacation Checklists: Kid’s Clothes

I have found that if I don’t make a checklist someone ends up on vacation without a bathing suit or some essential item so I made up a standard clothes packing list which I can vary, if needed, and just print out.

The next time and sanity saver is to hand out the checklist and let each person lay out their things, calling me when they are done.

Our kids like this as it means it’s getting close to vacation time, they get to make decisions on what to wear, with my overrule allowed, and then they pack it all up ready to go. My youngest will sometimes ask for help from myself or one of the older kids, but the rest have been doing it so long I usually don’t need to help.

When they think they are ready to pack, I do go over the list, though, as there are times when something is listed yet forgotten.

And can you believe, sometimes they ask if they can help me pack my cloths, too!

Last Minute Clothes Shopping!

I have found that a few days before we are due to ship off, some of my ever growing children decide that they are in desperate need of ..... shorts ... undies ... shoes ... pants ... bathing suits ..... So we rush off to find something, and are not as careful in watching our costs - we need them NOW!

I have decided that next year I will have them lay out everything about a month before we go - in fact, maybe even just go through all of their clothes to see what is getting too small, not enough of, getting worn out, not worn anymore.

No more last minute Wal-Mart rushes!!!!!!!

I prefer homemade chocolate cookies, especially fresh out of the oven, to store bought ones.

One year we wanted good, fresh cookies for our trip.
So the day before I just whipped up a batch of fresh cookies to take.
Yeah, right!

The couple of days before vacation tend to be a bit hectic -
I knew I wouldn’t have time to bake them and once I was on vacation -
did I want to bake?!?!?

Solution: A few weeks ahead,
we made up cookie dough, shaped it into rolls,
wrapped it in wax paper, stuck it in ziplock bags and froze it.

Hungry for cookies? Take out a roll, turn on the oven,
slice and bake.

But then again, how about just slice and eat frozen?!?! YUM!!!

Traveling With Little Ones: Mid-Way Hotel Stops

The Sun Times article I talked about in my June 14th post reminded me of this:

When our kids were younger, the thought of driving 8 hours with them was not very appealing.

Our solution was to drive 2 hours, break to race into the rest stop’s bathroom. They’d soon come out running to find a monster coming toward them to try and catch them, who looked surprisingly like Papa. A straggling, screaming, giggling child was almost grabbed when all of a sudden another child came to the rescue and distracted the monster.

All of this surge of energy and screams ended with climbing back in car-seats for the last 2 hours.

Our driving was finished for the day when we reached our mid-way hotel, complete with pool and .... kids eat free ..... or ..... free continental breakfast (not just sweet rolls! - we check when we called for reservations. Lots of sugar in children does not go well with driving!)

Repeat the following day, and arrive at the destination. Much easier on little travelers and big ones, too!

Vacations And The Kitchen - Meals Made Easy

I have found a great way to save time on meals while on vacation.

I plan out our meals, picking freezable dinners - I make them up ahead of time.

I put chuck steaks or chicken in marinade filled ziplock bags to marinate while thawing, all ready for the grill. Chicken - I bag up chicken legs with BBQ sauce - all ready to throw in the crockpot, sometimes I precook it and freeze. Meatloaf? I make two - one for dinner, freeze the other. Make two lasagna’s, dinner’s done and one for our trip.

A few weeks before leaving, double your dinner recipes, eating one, saving the other for your trip. Even better, make four meatloafs, eat one, freeze the other three - one for vacation, two for another day!

Oh, and save one of those meals in the freezer for your arrival home - something all in one and easy.

Normally, I try to limit kitchen paper products - I’d rather use the money for food - we can’t eat paper! Hmmm, though my daughter’s rat, Carmie, sure does like to eat it!

But then there is vacation.

Do you ever tire of washing dishes many times a day? Or do your kids tire of it?
We do.

We’ve just recently decided to use paper plates, cups, bowls and silverware for our vacations. That includes bowls for cereal, too! We used to do a lot of dishes and I didn't want to!

The kids (they do most of the dishes at home) really like the break, freeing us up to enjoy our vacation!

Is your family like mine?

I have everyone’s medical history in my head, so if there is an ER or doctor visit, I am Supermom! I can tell them who’s allergic to what medicine, who’s had what, when, which doctor, etc.

But ...... what happens if the emergency happens to me?

What if I got hurt, or I'm away and one of my children gets hurt, would my husband or any of my children know who’s allergic to penicillin, what medicines/suppliments everyone is on, what doctor is treating my daughter for asthma and how?

I realized I need to have this on hand - for home and for vacations. A sheet listing each persons medical history, including doctor’s and emergency contact numbers.

Where to keep it?

Time, Cookies and Barney, or Wishbone If You Prefer!

As you drive along, you hear squeaking from the back, "How much time left?"

"A half hour more."

Ten minutes later, "Is it a half hour yet?"

Young children and comprehension of time don’t go together very well. But time, cookies and Barney do.

Barney, yes, that purple dinosaur show, was a favorite of my children, as well as Wishbone. Each show was one half hour long and watching a few a week, the kids knew the feeling of about how long it took to watch one show - one half hour. So instead of answering "a half hour," we’d say "a half hour - one Barney or Wishbone long." Much easier to understand and relate to!

So where are the cookies in this? Another way to judge time segments! If the trip takes 60 minutes, the trip is broken up into 6 cookies.

20 minutes into the ride, when the question of "How much time left?" The answer is "The trip takes 6 cookies, you’ve eaten 2, how many cookies are left?" Throw a bit of school in there!

Cookies are what my just-turned 11 year old still uses. Yes, she could use minutes, but cookies are just more fun!

Organizing Clothes -- Awana Themes at Camp

A few days ago I posted Clothes and Vacations - Staying Organized. Today this tip came in handy.

My youngest, Gina is 11 today and tomorrow she goes off to camp for the first time - Awana Scholarship Camp.

She is so excited about going. I just about went crazy, tho!!!

Awana has theme days - and she doesn't have a Hawaiian shirt, a college logo shirt, ....

We spent the evening scrounging at home for anything to make the theme with. And even, shhhhhh, borrowing her oldest's sister's shirt. Shhhhhhh.

As to organizing - the bags helped SO much.

Label bag "Tuesday - Hawaiian,"
Put in Hawaiian shirt, shorts, undies, socks, toss in suitcase.
Check off of list.
Done.
Next?

Come Hawaiian Day she doesn’t have to dig around in her suitcase trying to remember what she picked out to wear - she just looks for the bag. Done. Easy.

It was a pain trying to find things that would fit her and fit the theme without going shopping, but it’s going to be so easy for her at camp.

She’s all packed and has her themes all under control!

Hotel Rooms for Large Families

I like this comment I received on my duplicate blog at The Old Schoolhouse - I wanted to share it with you.

We just got back from vacation and found a great hotel at a great price. We have nine in our family and would normally have to book two rooms, but Quality Inn & Suites offers two room suites (we got one for 87.00 a night- better than the 70 dollars each for two rooms which was 140.00 per night) The two room suites have two doubles, a queen and a sofabed and a mini kitchen area. You can also ask for a crib. They come with free continental breakfast and usually have a heated pool, sauna, jacuzzi and exercise room. They are not five star hotels, but they certainly work great for our large family who like to stay together.

Fun In The Car - Goody Bags

As our kids get older, they travel much easier, they don't get so antsy and can travel 8 hours without too many squawks.

When they were younger I'd make up goody bags - little ziplock baggies with specials in them - a piece of gum, 2 Starbursts, some trail mix, some M&M's, etc.

Every 1/2 hour (this was when we'd go 4 hours max a day) they each had their turn reaching in a bag and seeing what baggie they pulled out.

A treat for traveling well!

Only 4 To A Room!!!

Have you ever called up the national number for a hotel chain to reserve a room for your family of ..... only to be told 'Only 4 to a room! You'll have to book 2 rooms?"

With 6 in our family, we have.

Let you in on a secret.

If the agent at the national number says no - ask for the local number of the hotel you are interested in and call them. We have never been refused when we wanted 6 in our room, regardless of what the national number said.

You can also ask for cots or a crib, if you need one. Sometimes they are free, sometimes a small fee is required.

Room for 6, please! And make that non-smoking!
And, while you are at it, would you please have 2 extra of towels, pillows and blankets sent up?

Clothes and Vacations - Staying Organized

When our children were young, I wanted them to be able to get dressed on their own while keeping the clean separate from the dirty.

My solution was to take an outfit - shorts, t-shirt, socks, undies - roll them up and put a rubberband around it. Or, if I had some, I’d roll them up and stick them in a large ziplock bag. I also have a few with jeans and a sweatshirt, an extra bag each of socks, undies and t-shirts.

To help with the 'I don't like this outfit!' we work together packing - what top goes with what bottoms. In the morning, either they put on what they wore the day before, or they just grab a roll - no more 'I can't find any socks!'

Using the bags works especially well for camping, this keeps clothes clean and orderly - even in messy weather.

Don’t think this is just for the kids, we do it, too!

Fun In The Car - What Kind of BINGO?

Now that I am blogging on vacations and travel, my husband has been bringing home related articles. Monday's Chicago Sun Times' article caught my eye on a few things which I hope to cover in other posts, today I want to tell you about Bingo.

When we first started to travel with our kids, we didn't have the internet so we made up games. I'd make up a Bingo game or I'd borrow my friend's homemade one. Now Car Bingo and many other games are easy to find on the net, just print out what you want.

Or you can buy one like the wierd Bingo game noted in the article ....... Roadkill Bingo!

"Gross!!" you say?

Guess what? 3 out of 4 of my kids would have a blast playing it.

And the great thing is it's only $5. Family On Board also carries other games to include in your traveling bag.

I think I've just found a fun birthday present idea for some wierd family members!

Fun In The Car - Car Aerobics!

Turn on the foot stompin’ praise music and start tapping your toes, singing along ........

But why stop there? Get those arms up, pick up those legs, sway back and forth and wiggle in your seat!

Your kids will love it, but then, they might be way too cool.

As the designated vacation driver, I even indulge to a point. Now, stop right there, don’t go yelling at me, I don’t do anything unsafe.

I have cruise control so my legs are free. I’ll march in place, flex and point my feet, wiggle my hips side to side, kegels, a slow shimmy (I think that’s what it’s called) - as in left shoulder forward, right shoulder forward, repeat. Shoulder rolls and shrugs.

And, on top of all of that, I must remember to keep my back in line, my chin tucked in (not down), and I do neck exercises called a Dorsal Glide.

Watch your posture as many drivers tend to sag and round their shoulders which encourages neck and back problems.

I spent all last summer getting rid of pain, learning all about how to repair my neck and back with physical therapy, including dorsal glides and proper posture.

So I will indulge in a bit of car aerobics now and then whether or not my kids think it’s cool!

Fun In The Car - Honks and Smiles

A simple, favorite traveling past time for our children is trying to get trucks to honk. I don’t recommend this in urban areas, but out in the middle of a corn or soybean field, and we have lots of those in Illinois, who cares!?

Imagine being in a bus and reaching up to pull on the rope to ring the driver to stop. Hold your arm up like that with a fist, repeatedly making a pulling down motion as you come in line where the truck driver can look down and see you.

“Honk! Hoooonk!” Followed by a smile and wave.

The kids cheer and wave back.

Simple minds, simple pleasures!

Is There Any More Toilet Paper?!?!?!

One year, we went to my ‘favorite’ place. I do say that tongue-in-cheek because it's a place I don’t want to return to, my favorite place to help me remember what to ask when making vacation inquiries. Here’s where word-of-mouth helps more than trusting the salesperson!

Imagine a family of six, four gals, in a rental home eight miles down a gravel road. You’ve just arrived and race to the bathroom, that is, after all of your children, to find there’s a few strands of paper left on the roll. Opening up the cabinet, you discover one roll, put that one out. The rest must be in the upstairs bathroom....so you thought...only to find a single roll sitting on the back of the toilet combined with a partly used roll.....and this is on day one right after you arrive and no owner/manager around to get more from!

“I get that bed!” “I get this one!” “Mama, there’s stuff in all of the dressers and stuff on them, where do we put our clothes?” Oh, and no closets, not one! Live out of suitcases for a week, with four small children who get themselves dressed, where did those shorts go?

Our master bed had 3 sides up against walls with our two suitcases on the floor next to it. Our four small children shared two double beds up in the loft, each bed crammed in the corners with barely enough room to get between them. The sheets didn’t fit the beds and kept coming undone which was resolved by the little ones pulling out the beds a bit to tuck in easier.

The lake at the bottom of the hill, ok, very steep grade, was beautiful, but all along the bank was marshy - like we were really going to wade through that to go swimming in a huge lake? Thankfully, with the steepness, we didn’t have any toddlers to go tumbling down!

It was some sort of tiny beetle’s season to join us in the house, in swarms - I stood with a fly swatter at the kitchen table for a good 10 minutes, continually pounding on the bugs attracted to the kitchen light, swarming all over the table. What effect did I have? Smooshed bugs on the table with bugs swarming and crawling on them. Anyone ready for dinner?

Oh, and by the way the note says, you can each take only a couple of short showers during your stay, and yes, the house comes with a washer and dryer, but you can only use those a couple of times - because the septic tank can’t handle any more.

You know what, we had a blast anyways, we hiked, saw eagles, discovered new birds not resident in our area, caught frogs and toads, played by some ponds we found, skipped rocks, waded, watched mice run across the living room floor - no problem, we’ll share the space. When it rained we played playdough with toothpicks, even dropping some on the floor. We had to get on our hands and knees to find them all, all part of the fun.

When we leave a place, we make sure to clean it up well, we’d like to be asked to come back. We make sure all of the dishes are washed, put away, counters and tables are wiped, bathroom picked up, sink wiped, towels all in a pile. We usually strip the beds, because we are nice? No! Because we take each level off to see what child left what item tucked away between which sheets, and what is shoved under the bed! And after all of that, we vacuum and leave.

About a week after returning to our perfect mansion (funny how big and wonderful your place can seem!) we received a letter from the owner returning our deposit. He stated that he almost didn’t return it because ...... toothpicks almost broke the vacuum, the maid had to hire someone to help move the beds back....and....and....

Yes, this is my favorite vacation to remember things to ask in the future! Do you really think to bring extra toilet paper while on vacation - that is, if you are not camping or in an RV?

NNow, imagine instead, getting a great note like this from an owner after reserving your vacation. This shows a response from a place that is family friendly and helpful:

If you are taking children, question how child friendly is it, do you get a warm welcome after mentioning them, or a reserved, yes, children are allowed? Ask specifically what is/isn’t included/allowed. Make a master list of things you need answers to and be bold enough to ask, even what might seem to be dumb questions like, do you supply toilet paper?

Ask about emergencies - is the information posted and easily found in a panic, what number to call, where to go? One place we go to is an hour from the nearest hospital, and that’s going 60 on winding, hilly roads! The owners have contracted a helicopter ambulance service as well as keeping a stocked first aid box in the rental home.

Toys, books, videos, games, jars to catch bugs in, dress up .... things that would be nice to not have to crowd your car with.

Washer and dryer. For a week’s vacation, we take about 3-4 days clothes and keep up with the wash. This gives us more room in the car and less of Mt. Everlaundry piled high. One option when none are available, I’ve taken everything to the laundry mat after unpacking. Quick and easy. A couple of hours enjoying a book while you wait and Mt. Everlaundry is conquered!

It’s taken years of vacations to realize I have to ask very specific questions, not assume things. Just because there is a washer and dryer available doesn’t mean I can use it when I need it! And a daily shower? Sorry, wait until you get home!

Are We There Yet?

How many times have you heard that whether on a 50 minute drive or a 5 hour drive?

How about maps for the kids?

There’s a few ways you can do this. Either just buy them each a map and highlight the trip....easy, can be overwhelming for the non-map reader and a bit too much for the penny-pinchers (me!).

When our kids were young, I’d break up the trip putting each hour or half hour segment on a page. Using simple lines I’d draw the road we were traveling on, some cross roads or landmarks to watch for, and label it all, including the page number (in case your husband drops those pages on the way to copying them!) Finish up with a staple in the corner.

Now, perfectionists, every curve in the road does not have to drawn! Simple is best. You could even give this to one or all of your children to do for a school project!

For those of you who cringe at the thought of drawing even a line, here’s an easier way. Use a mapping program to print out the trip, but remember, if your kids have never used a map, this can be confusing. Take the time to ask them questions about it to make sure they can read it.

Include a highlighter and map for the trip then when you hear "How long?" you can say "How long do you think?" or "When’s our next turn, do you know where we are?" It keeps them interested and occupied, and you probably won’t hear those words very often!

Flattened Bread and Smooshed Bananas

"Maamaaaaaa, the bananas leaked out all over my shoe!" And in a crowded van on curvy roads, mmmm, delicious! The dilemma of how to pack your van with food for your army for a week.

Apple boxes from the grocery store.

Actually, they are great for the attic, for moving, for storing what you need stored. I pack our food, paper goods, things that don’t need to go in the fridge, whatever needs packing that can’t be stuffed in around the bikes. If the boxes are in a position to shift, Mark ties them down - as in behind the driver’s seat where they are stacked three high.

The great things about apple boxes are they --- are free, stack easily, don’t crush, have tops that just slide down over the bottom, make great tables in the car and the kids can rest their feet on them without --- smooshed bananas and flattened bread!

Eating "In"

Friday, my husband brought home an article from the Chicago Sun Times about eating while traveling. The gist of it was healthy eating - to pack things so as not to be tempted with junk food.

One of the suggestions was to make sure to get out of the car and sit down for the meal. This is one we, the Pusateri's, disagree with. We are all sitting in a car for hours, do we really want to sit more without any progress?

What we prefer is to eat while we are driving along. When we do make a pit stop, we use this time to burn off some energy and get the kinks out of our legs.

We like to spend our time getting there vs. sitting there - it seems to lessen the "are we there yet?" and helps with the wiggles.

Pets And Vacations

Having pets can pose a problem when it's time to plan your family vacation. We currently have 2 dogs, a cat, a cockatiel and a rat. Yes, a rat! Rats make great pets!

It is very difficult to find places that take animals, and certain animals just don't vacation well. So what to do with the zoo besides a kennel?

In the past we've found vacation places we could take our dogs with, the rest could get by at home with one daily visit by the neighbor kids. We have also sent our dogs off to different family members - our Aussie is very laidback and easy - well, except for chewing her bowl up! But the German Shephard puppy decided to ricochet off the walls with their Boston Bull puppy, taking a 'few' things down with them.

This year we came up with a solution. We hired two teens from our church - brother and sister - we've known them for years. They housesat for us! It worked out very well, all of the animals were in their normal surroundings and they had kids to play with.

I picked these teens because they were mature and responsible, they owned pets, and they had parents who would make sure all was well.

Think through your family members, friends, people from church or group, ask around. We didn't want someone who would be out late, might party or drink at the house, instead one who had the time to give attention to the animals and watch over the house.

With some patience you should be able to find someone to turn the keys and leashes over to!

Want A Place To Vacation This July or August?

Panic! You want to go on vacation this summer, but you don't have a place lined up!!!

Koinania Cottage just let me know that they have openings in July and August.

Imagine, you're standing, looking in at a crowded pool searching for a shaded chair to sit in while you watch your kids. Starting to head over to the only free one way at the far end, you turn around to make sure your little ducklings are all in a row, only to discover the littlest one has waddled off in the other direction behind a mom in the same suit as yours, and to see him disappear in a crowd. You yell his name, but your voice disappears in the overpowering noise. PANIC!

Now imagine sitting in your lawn chair in the edge of a slow running, shallow river reading a book. Your children are all having a wonderful time playing. Looking up shows your oldest wandering way up the river, almost around the bend. Hollering at her to come back, you're surprised she actually hears you!

No clorine smell to wash off, plenty of interesting things to see, peace and quiet.

You won't need a vacation from your vacation!

In my last tip I suggested finding a quiet place to get away from it all. But where?

This is where we, the Pusateri's, have gone the past 4 years.

Koinania is nestled in a valley surrounded by the foothills of Mark Twain National Forest about 2 hours southwest of St. Louis, MO.

Is it quiet? There usually isn't more than a handful of cars daily driving by on the gravel road, oh, the school bus and the mailtruck - but you could count those on that hand. Airplanes - hmmm, is that an airplane or a satellite way up there? Well, I must confess, sometimes jet fighters do come over and dog fight way up high - but that is so much fun to watch.

It is so quiet there that you can stand a football field apart and usually still be able to hear each other and understand!

Ok, but what is there to do? Swim in a crystal clear river, great for wading and places deep enough to jump in, where you can grab the Wilt's noodles and float down lazily. Hiking is just up behind the fields - follow fresh springs up to the starting points. Along the way your kids might just find a box turtle sunning itself, a frog hopping along, a pilated woodpecker pecking away.....

A Vacation From Vacations

Do you come home from your family's vacation needing a vacation?

Do you tend to go on vacations to places that are noisy, busy, full of people, where you are constantly on the go?

We have found that a quiet, rural vacation away from all of the everyday phone ringing, door knocking, planes flying over, sirens, cars flying by, running kids to this and that event, the typical hustle and bustle --- this is how to have a restful vacation - away from it all.
